Frequently Asked Questions

Is therapy for me?

You do not need to have a mental health disorder or diagnosis to benefit from therapy (though a diagnosis is required if you will be using health insurance; see info on health insurance below). Among other things, working with a therapist can help you to increase coping skills and manage stress, improve communication and relationships, more smoothly navigate life changes and transitions, process grief and rebuild following loss or trauma, discover insights and make lasting changes to thought patterns and behaviors that get in the way of you living the life you want. Many people find it helpful and relieving to be able to share openly in a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space that is completely separate from friends, family or their communities.

But I’m nervous.

That’s okay! I especially enjoy working with therapy first-timers and do my best to be open and transparent about the process from day one. I offer a free phone or video consultation to help prospective clients determine if working together could be a good fit. The intake process (first 1-3 sessions) helps me to thoroughly understand what brings you into therapy and identifies clear goals as part of our work together so that you can be informed about what to expect going forward. Each person’s needs and circumstances are different, but sessions typically last up to 55 minutes and are scheduled weekly or biweekly. Some problems or situational concerns may be effectively helped by short-term interventions, while others may require longer-term or ongoing support and maintenance to treat. I will meet you wherever you are in your life journey or process of change, and we’ll start there together.

Can I use health insurance?

Yes! If you will be using insurance to help cover the cost of sessions, you are responsible for any deductible, co-pays, or co-insurance determined by your specific plan for outpatient/office visits. Questions about insurance benefits and eligibility should be directed to the member services phone number on the back of your insurance ID card for your specific plan, or by visiting your insurance company's website. Adrift Counseling, LLC is in-network with the following health insurers:

  • Aetna

  • BlueCross BlueShield (including BluePlus PMAP)

  • Cigna (Evernorth Behavioral Health)

  • HealthPartners

  • Medica

  • Medical Assistance (MN Medicaid)

  • Optum Live and Work Well EAP

  • Surest

  • UCare Individual and Family Plans (including UCare PMAP)

  • United Behavioral Health (UBH)

  • UnitedHealthcare (UHC)

  • UMR

Private Pay

I offer private ("out-of-pocket") pay as an option for individuals who are uninsured or prefer greater flexibility and privacy in not needing to report health information to a third-party payer, adhere to insurance plan limits on length or frequency of sessions, and to not require a mental health diagnosis for psychotherapy to be covered by insurance. You are able to use HSA/FSA funds to cover the out-of-pocket cost if paying privately (or for co-pays and deductible amounts if using health insurance).

The private pay rates below are equivalent to what is billed to health insurance companies for the same services, and do not reflect in-network provider discounts for those using insurance:

  • $200 - Psychotherapy intake and diagnostic assessment (90791)

  • $170 - Psychotherapy session 53 minutes (90837)

  • $140 - Psychotherapy session 38-52 minutes (90834)

  • $110 - Psychotherapy session 16-37 minutes (90832)

Tell me about telehealth.

Telehealth is the use of secure, HIPAA-compliant technology (audio and video connection via smartphone, computer, or tablet) to conduct psychotherapy sessions remotely rather than in-person in an office or clinic setting. I began offering telehealth at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and since that time have completed a number of trainings to help me effectively utilize this technology. Benefits of telehealth may include:

  • Ease of access by being able to participate in sessions from the comfort of home, convenience of a private space at work, or wherever you happen to be (for safety purposes I will need to confirm your physical location at the start of each meeting)

  • Increased flexibility for scheduling by not having to allow for travel time (for both therapist and client)

  • Treatment efficacy; for many individuals psychotherapy can be just as effective (and in some cases, even more so) online as in-person

  • Fewer barriers to services such as not having to cancel appointments due to mild illness, inclement weather, or lack of transportation

  • Greater access to services due to not being limited to a local geographical area; although I am based in the Twin Cities, I am able to work with clients located anywhere within the state of Minnesota
